A l'origine, Why. Why ? Un homme, Jonathan Wolf. Puis un, deux, trois autres. Josiah Wolf (frère de Jonathan), Doug McDiarmid, Matt Meldon. Un groupe en vrac, abstract hip-hop dit-on. Ca ressemble plus à de l'indie rock expérimental comme Xiu Xiu ou Animal Collective peuvent en faire. De l'indip-hop ?
Ca bouge dans tous les sens, ça surprend à chaque album, chaque titre, chaque seconde. Et il y a des trucs solos (Oaklandazulasylum, Early Whitney EP). Why ?, ça sonne tout pareil. Et des collaborations à la pelle. cLOUDDEAD, Odd Nosdam, Themselves, Subtle, Thee More Shallows, 13 & God, Fog, Greenthink, Xiu Xiu, ... Et donc du son à la pelle.
