Although both Adam (also known as 'Doseone') and Jeff (also known as 'Jel') have strong ties to the Anticon. music collective, Subtle is not on the Anticon roster. Subtle started as an Oakland-based band in 2001. While considered by the artists to be "genreless", Subtle has close ties to the hip-hop and indie music scene."
Entre 2002 et 2003, le groupe a enregistré quatre EP : Summer, Autumn, Winter et Spring, regroupés plus tard dans l'album Earthsick.

En 2004 puis 2006 sortent les excellents A New White et For Hero : For Fool, entre rock expérimental, electronica magnifique et abstract hip-hop. Du pur Anticon quoi.
